Your options
Full dentures replace an entire upper or lower arch. Upper dentures stay in place by suction against the palate; lower dentures rely more on the ridge and muscles, which is why they are harder to stabilise.
Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth and clip onto your remaining natural teeth with discreet clasps or precision attachments. They also stop the remaining teeth drifting.
Implant-supported dentures snap onto two to four dental implants. They do not move when you eat or speak, they preserve bone, and for lower arches especially they transform quality of life.
Immediate dentures are placed on the day remaining teeth are extracted, so you are never without teeth, then relined once the gums heal.
How dentures are made
- Exam and planning. Which teeth can be kept, whether implants make sense, and what you want the result to look like.
- Impressions. Detailed molds of your gums and any remaining teeth.
- Bite and shade. We record how your jaws meet and choose tooth color and shape together.
- Try-in. A wax version lets you see the smile and check speech and fit before anything is finalised.
- Fitting. The finished denture is delivered and adjusted. Expect one or two short follow-ups to fine-tune sore spots.
Getting used to new dentures
The first couple of weeks are an adjustment: more saliva, some sore spots, and practice with speech and softer foods. Read aloud, start with small bites, chew on both sides, and come back for adjustments — we expect them. The American Dental Association says the same: some soreness at first is normal, and follow-up visits are usually needed so the fit can be checked and adjusted. Within a month most people forget they are wearing them.
Caring for dentures
- Rinse after meals and brush daily with a denture brush, not regular toothpaste (it scratches).
- Soak overnight in water or a denture solution; never in hot water, which warps them.
- Brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth every day.
- See us yearly: gum and bone changes mean dentures need relines, and we check the tissue underneath.
Cost and insurance
Most PPO plans cover dentures at around 50% after the deductible, typically once every five to seven years. Implant-supported dentures cost more up front because of the implants, and many patients consider them the best money they have spent. We itemise the quote, verify your benefits and offer financing.
Dentures: your questions answered
Typically four to six weeks over four or five visits: impressions, a bite record, a try-in to check the look and fit, then the final fitting. If teeth need extracting first, an immediate denture can be placed the same day and refined as you heal.
Not modern ones. Tooth shade, shape and arrangement are chosen with you at the try-in, and the gum-colored base is matched to your tissue. Most people are surprised how natural they look.
Usually five to eight years. Your jaw changes shape over time, so most dentures need a reline every one to two years to keep the fit snug.
A denture that clips onto two or more implants. It doesn't slip, you can eat far more confidently, and the implants slow bone loss. It is the option we recommend most for lower dentures, which are hardest to keep stable.
It is better not to. Removing them overnight lets the gums rest and reduces the risk of fungal infection. Soak them in water or a denture solution.
