Deep Cleaning for Gum Disease in Pflugerville, TX

A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, treats gum disease by removing plaque and hardened tartar from below the gumline and smoothing the roots so the gums can reattach. At Radiant Dentistry ATX in Pflugerville it is done under local anesthetic, usually over two visits, followed by maintenance cleanings every three to four months.

In the Austin area a deep cleaning commonly runs $200–$400 per quadrant. Most PPO plans cover 50–80% as a periodontal service. Exact quote after your exam. Insurance & financing.

What gum disease is

Gum disease starts when plaque hardens into tartar below the gumline, where a toothbrush cannot reach. The gums become inflamed (gingivitis), then begin to pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that trap more bacteria. Left alone, the infection slowly dissolves the bone that holds the teeth (periodontitis). It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and because it rarely hurts, most people find out at a checkup rather than from a symptom. The American Dental Association’s overview of gum disease explains the stages.

Signs you may need a deep cleaning

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Red, swollen or tender gums, or gums that have receded
  • Teeth that look longer, feel loose or have shifted
  • Pockets of 4 mm or more when we measure your gums at a checkup

At every checkup we measure the pocket depth around each tooth. Healthy gums measure 1 to 3 mm. Anything deeper, especially with bleeding, is where a deep cleaning is recommended.

What the treatment involves

Scaling and root planing is done under local anesthetic so you feel pressure and vibration but no pain. Scaling removes tartar and bacteria from the tooth surface and from inside the pockets, using ultrasonic and hand instruments. Root planing smooths the root so the gum can reattach and new tartar has nowhere to grip. We usually treat half the mouth per visit, about an hour each, a week or two apart. The ADA’s page on scaling and root planing describes the same steps.

Afterwards the gums are tender for a few days and teeth can be sensitive to cold for a week or two, both of which settle. Warm salt-water rinses, a soft brush and over-the-counter pain relief are all most people need.

Aftercare and maintenance

We see you again at four to six weeks to re-measure the pockets. If they have shrunk, you move to periodontal maintenance: a cleaning every three to four months rather than every six, because the bacteria rebuild faster in gums that have had disease. If deep pockets remain, Dr. Wahi may refer you to a periodontist for further treatment. Gum disease is managed rather than cured, and the maintenance interval is what keeps the teeth.

Cost and insurance

A deep cleaning is billed per quadrant, commonly $200 to $400 each in the Austin area, so the total depends on how many areas need it. Most PPO plans cover scaling and root planing at 50 to 80% as a basic or periodontal service, and maintenance cleanings afterwards. We verify your benefits, give you an itemised quote after the exam, and offer financing if the balance is large. Patients without insurance should note that our new patient special includes a regular cleaning only; a deep cleaning is quoted separately and in writing.

FAQ

Deep Cleaning & Gum Treatment: your questions answered

  • A regular cleaning polishes above the gumline and is preventive. A deep cleaning treats existing gum disease: it reaches 4 mm or more below the gumline to remove tartar and bacteria, and smooths the root surfaces. It is a treatment rather than a routine visit, which is also why insurance files it differently.

  • Not during treatment. The area is numbed with local anesthetic, and we treat one side of the mouth per visit so you are never numb all over. Expect tender gums and some sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards.

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss, persistent bad breath, gums that look red or pulled back from the teeth, and teeth that feel loose or longer. According to the CDC almost half of American adults over 30 have some form of it, and it rarely hurts until it is advanced.

  • Commonly $200 to $400 per quadrant in the Austin area; a full mouth is four quadrants, and most PPO plans pay 50 to 80%. We measure your gums first and give you an itemised quote, so you only pay for the areas that need it.

  • Lost bone and gum do not regrow on their own, but treatment stops the loss, and swollen gums tighten back against the teeth within weeks. Catching it early is what keeps the teeth.

  • A follow-up check at four to six weeks to measure the gums again, then periodontal maintenance cleanings every three to four months instead of every six. That shorter interval is what stops the bacteria rebuilding.
