What a root canal actually is
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, containing the nerve and blood vessels. When bacteria reach it — through a deep cavity, a crack, or repeated dental work — it becomes inflamed and then infected, which is what causes a throbbing, lingering toothache and, eventually, an abscess.
A root canal removes that tissue, disinfects and shapes the canals, and seals them. The tooth stays in your mouth, keeps its root in the bone, and works normally. The American Association of Endodontists describes a modern root canal as very similar to a routine filling, usually completed in one or two appointments.
Why the reputation is out of date
The fear comes from the pain of the infection, which people remember as the treatment. Modern anesthetics, rotary instruments and digital imaging mean the visit is quiet and controlled. Most patients tell us it was easier than they expected, and the relief is immediate. If you are nervous, nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) is available.
What to expect
- Diagnosis. An exam and digital X-ray confirm the nerve is involved and show the shape of the roots.
- Numbing. Profound local anesthetic. We do not begin until you are completely numb.
- Cleaning. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth; the canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped.
- Sealing. The canals are filled with a rubber-like material and the opening is closed with a filling.
- Restoration. Back teeth need a crown within a few weeks to prevent fracture.
Most root canals are completed in a single visit of 60–90 minutes.
After your root canal
Expect mild tenderness for two to four days, managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid chewing on that side until the permanent restoration is in place. Call us if pain increases rather than decreases, or swelling develops.

Root Canal Treatment: your questions answered
The tooth is completely numbed first, so the procedure itself feels like having a filling. The pain you may have had before — from the infected nerve — is what the root canal removes. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
Usually 60 to 90 minutes, in one visit for front teeth and often for back teeth too. Complex cases or active infection may need a second visit. The crown that protects the tooth afterwards is a separate appointment.
Toothache that lingers or throbs, pain when biting, sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the stimulus is gone, a pimple-like bump on the gum, darkening of the tooth, or swelling. Sometimes there are no symptoms and it shows up on an X-ray.
